Bacon Explosion!!!

It's pretty much exactly what it sounds like.

This ridiculous concoction, created by a couple guys at BBQaddicts.com, first came into the world last December. It quickly became an internet phenomenon, capturing the hearts of many, including my crazy husband and some of his crazy friends.

Thus began our bacon-y adventure.

It was decided that we (mostly Matt and his friends) would attempt to explode some bacon of our own. So last night, that's what we did.

Our ingredients:
2 lbs. thick-cut hickory smoked bacon
2 lbs. mild Italian sausage
Hickory Brown Sugar BBQ sauce
BBQ seasoning rub

After my shopping trip, Matt was ready to construct his "roll o' meat."

Step 1. Form bacon into a weave. Ours was 7 x 7 (slices).

Step 2. BBQ seasoning rub.

Step 3. Spread out sausage on top of bacon.

Step 4. Fry up remaining bacon and pile it on.

Step 5. Some BBQ sauce.

We then had a GIANT mound of meat.

Step 6. Roll up sausage.

Step 7. Roll bacon weave around sausage roll.

Our mound of meat was now a GIANT roll of meat.

Step 8. More seasoning and slap that baby on the grill. Matt had his hickory chips all ready to smoke it up.

It was very exciting for him:

Step 9. Let slow cook for a long time (couple hours?... I don't really know...) and top with more BBQ sauce.

Poor Katie (the dog). She wanted some, too.

Before partaking, we did have a little bit of greenery.

And then it was on to the main event.

Surprisingly, it was pretty good. And not in a "delicious because it's sooo greasy and bad for you" way. The bacon was actually not overwhelming, and the sausage flavor really came through.

And, though this can't be said for Matt and the guys, I had less than half of my piece. It was just enough (because the flavor was a little rich), and it took the calorie count down to a reasonable number. So the Bacon Explosion did not leave me feeling like I wanted to explode.
